The Ngorongoro Conservation Area stretches from the world-famous Serengeti National Park in the north to the Great Rift Valley in the east. Covering more than 8,000 km² (3,200 sq. miles), this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Africa’s most breathtaking safari destinations. The area includes the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu Plains, Olduvai Gorge, Empakaai Crater, Olmoti Crater, and the sacred Oldonyo Lengai Mountain. Its landscapes range from lush forests and open savannahs to lakes, swamps, and volcanic craters, creating a rich habitat for incredible wildlife.
At the heart of the conservation area lies the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, often called Africa’s Garden of Eden. Formed nearly three million years ago after a giant volcano collapsed, the crater created a unique ecosystem filled with diverse vegetation and abundant wildlife.
Today, the crater is home to one of the highest concentrations of animals in Africa. Visitors can encounter zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, warthogs, baboons, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, and hippos. The crater is also famous for its predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and elusive leopards.
One of the greatest highlights of visiting Ngorongoro is the chance to spot the legendary Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino — all within the crater floor. Measuring about 20 kilometres wide and 600 metres deep, the crater offers unforgettable game drives surrounded by stunning scenery and panoramic viewpoints from the rim.
With its extraordinary beauty and remarkable wildlife, the Ngorongoro Crater is recognized as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders.
A safari with Wild Diary Safaris is not only about wildlife — it is also an opportunity to experience Tanzania’s rich cultural heritage. The iconic Maasai people continue their traditional lifestyle within parts of the conservation area, where they graze their livestock alongside wildlife.
Guests can visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about their customs, dances, traditions, and daily life. For travelers interested in authentic cultural experiences, a Maasai cultural tour is a memorable addition to any safari itinerary.
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most iconic safari destinations and a must-visit for travelers seeking unforgettable wildlife experiences. We recommend spending at least one full day exploring the crater floor to fully enjoy the incredible wildlife and scenery. An additional day around the crater highlands allows you to discover nearby attractions and cultural experiences.
Wild Diary Safaris recommends staying at lodges along the crater rim for breathtaking sunrise views, comfortable rooms, and easy access to early morning game drives.
